A HERS Rating (Home Energy Rating System) assigns a score to your home based on a scale from 1-150, with 150 using the most energy and 0 being a "zero energy home" that produces as much energy as it uses.
The HERS Rating, administered by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), is calculated in a process that's very similar to a home energy audit. It includes blower door testing, infrared thermal imaging, duct leakage testing and more, with the added benefit of an objective score. The HERS Rating is an essential component of many energy efficiency programs, including Energy Star certification, qualification for an Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM) or Energy Improvement Mortgage (EIM), and can dramatically improve your home's resale value down the road, as more and more homebuyers become attuned to the various benefits of more energy efficient homes.
